Established in 1965, GC Battery Works Ltd celebrates their 60th year in business in 2025.
Our founder and original GC, George Coulter started the business in 1965 as a battery manufacturer. Having spent time working in England in the late 1950s as an apprentice in Bedfordshire (County Electrical Services UK Ltd) and continuing further work in London with Trojan Batteries in Hemel Hempstead & Hertfordshire. George returned home to his native Fermanagh with a wealth of knowledge and experience gained. Knowing the need for battery production he began the business in 1965. Some doubted the initial startup with its rural location away from the larger city of Belfast but within a short period of time the workforce at that time were manufacturing hundreds of batteries on a weekly basis and managing distribution all over Northern Ireland from Belfast to Strabane, Armagh to Ballycastle. From the earliest days services included battery re-charging, as well as the daily fitting of batteries in all types of vehicles. As time passed GC retired, passing the reins unto his son Robert in 1994 however call on site with us and it is fairly normal to see the original GC himself from time to time. Always ready with a smile and providing that personal customer service the company has been known for from its earliest days.
To this day Robert is still our main battery expert. Having hands-on experience from an early age Robert continued in his father’s footsteps. Daily supply to trade customers and fitting on site for customers. Supplying all your battery needs and more. All types of vehicles from lorries to motorbike. Quad, leisure, SLA are all available. Manufacturing has ceased but repair of the modern plastic case batteries occurs but is confined to the vintage vehicles. GC Battery Works remains among the last who can still offer this service.
With further expansion Robert introduced the beginnings of a range of electrical fence products. A shed was erected with the expansion to stock the large range of electric fencers & accessories are carried in stock to meet the needs of the farming/equestrian community.
As all know too well, the electrical fencing can be temperamental from time to time and Robert also offers a service to repair the electrical fencers and continues this to this day as well as readily available with many words of advice & wisdom gleaned over the years.
GC junior joined his father in 2014 with an eye on the online platforms and developing the business in the ecommerce world. Starting on Amazon & eBay and recently launching our very own website the company continues to supply a wide range of electrical fencing equipment in both the UK, ROI & branching out internationally. Ranging from posts to insulators we offer a range of reputable brands, tried and tested on site. Taking a brand that was begun by GC when the business founded George has linked the company across its 60 year span. We look forward to the next few years where there are plans to develop further as a company.
