BATTERY & ELECTRIC FENCING SPECIALISTS SINCE 1965
OUR HISTORY
60 Years in the making...
Established in 1965, GC Battery Works Ltd celebrates their 60th year in business in 2025.
G.C. Battery Works was founded by George Coulter Snr in 1965, manufacturing "Lead-Acid" batteries. George had previously spent some time working on the mainland in the late 1950s, firstly as an apprentice for County Electrical Services UK Ltd, Bedfordshire, and later working for Trojan Batteries in Hemel Hempstead & Hertfordshire. Some few years later, George returned home to his native Fermanagh countryside, having accumulated a wealth of knowledge and experience, with a desire in his heart to found his own business. Business colleagues and rivals doubted the initial start-up hidden away within its rural location, away from the bustling city of Belfast. However within a short period of time, the small company, with some 20 employees, were manufacturing hundreds of batteries on a weekly basis and distributing all over Northern Ireland and even further abroad. George's humble beginnings, gave the company that personal touch, delivering the newly made batteries, across the country, to customers in person, in the then company vehicle, a small red van.
As time passed George Coulter Snr retired, passing the reins unto his son Robert in 1994. Robert gained valuable experience working under his father, having hands-on experience within the family business from an early age.
As part of a promise to his father, Robert had to make his own mark on the company, opening new doors for the company branching out into the world of Electrical Fencing. At that time, still a fairly new technology, Robert found great success partnering with leading manufacturers Hotline, Rutland, Gallagher, and others for many years.
Fast forward to the present day, as battery production moved to, quicker, cheaper methods of production in India and China, sadly battery production came to an end, in-house manufacturing limited only to bespoke "Vintage" batteries not widely available. G.C. Battery Works remains among the last who can still offer this service. As a result to the decline in manufacturing. the company expanded heavily into a wider range of automotive & leisure batteries and electrical fencing products from partners from across the globe.
From 2014, Robert is now joined by his son, George Coulter Jnr. In the modern day, surrounded by technology and on-line shopping, George Jnr has set his eye on the "Online" & International Markets, with the goal of developing new international business relationships, offering new product ranges, and exploring vast new customer markets which was once never possible.
